John Cargile’s livestock operations included both cattle and sheep on the S Ranch, the Rocky Ranch and the A.T.A. Ranch. With other members of his family, Cargile purchased Producers Livestock Auction Company of San Angelo in 1954. Under his management the company became one of the top cattle markets in Texas and the largest sheep and goat market in the United States. Cargile served as president of both the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association.
