Although Ernest Browning was a cowboy most of his life, he worked in and later owned a grocery store (Piggly Wiggly) and meat business. He began purchasing land and cattle with his earnings until raising cattle became his only business. After gaining a reputation as a horseman, Browning became a founding member and a director of the American Quarter Horse Association. He was named president in 1958 and officiated as a judge in almost every major Quarter Horse show in the country.
