Hilmar Moore was a fifth-generation Texas rancher whose family dates back in Texas history to Stephen F. Austin’s original colony of settlers. Moore began owning his own cattle when he was six years old, and as an adult, he and his brother successfully operated the family cattle business. He began raising American Quarter Horses in 1938 and was a charter member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He served as president of the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association and was on the Board of Directors of the National Cattlemen’s Association.
