Clarence Scharbauer had a diversified livestock background. In 1947 he took over active management of Scharbauer Ranches, one of the larger operations in Texas and the Southwest. After more than 50 years of management, the empire grew to nine ranches in West Texas and the upper Texas Panhandle. Scharbauer was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. The Texas Thoroughbred Association honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
